The role of the Parents Promoters Foundation

In 2003 parents were asked by Lambeth Council to come forward as 'Promoters' for a new school. On July 21 2005 the School Organisation Committee accepted the Parent Promoters Foundation proposal for a new school.

Now 270 parents are members of the Parent Promoters Foundation. The PPF set up in May 2005 (registered with Companies House) consulted widely on the ethos of the school and has accepted legal responsibility to set up the school.

The Elmgreen School is the first school in England to be established by parents in partnership with a local authority.

The school's Governing Body and senior management team will lead and manage the school. Lambeth Council will set the admissions policy, employ staff and fund the buildings with money devolved from Government.

The Parent Promoters Foundation will continue to work to ensure that the school opens on time and reflects the PPF ethos. Lambeth Council will transfer the interest in the site and buildings to the PPF as long as the school is open, as The Elmgreen School is a voluntary controlled school.

The Ethos:

We will create an innovative place of learning that promotes high academic and vocational attainment and achievement.

We will achieve this by fostering a friendly co-operative spirit in which all individuals value each other and are helped to achieve their potential...

... and by placing the school at the heart of the community.

As the senior management team of the school concentrate on the detail of fleshing out a school to offer an excellent education to our children, the PPF continue to support the school and involve parents in its development.

When the school opens in September 2007 the PPF plan to incorporate the role of a Parent Council involving The Elmgreen School parents. The PPF will continue to reach out to parents in the local primary schools. Once the buildings are completed for the new school Lambeth will transfer their interest in the land and premises on the land for the duration of the life of the school to the PPF.

Temporary Governing Body

The Temporary Governing Body met for the first time in November 2005 and has appointed Asma Mansuri as the school's Headteacher. The composition of the Governing Body is at least a third of the total are parent governors, at least two places, but no more than a third of the total including the head teacher will be staff governors, at least one place but no more than a fifth of the total are LEA appointed governors, at least a tenth of the total are community governors, at least two places but no more than a quarter of the total may be partnership governors.
